Vlastimil Karlík has been involved in nature conservation since the late 1990s in various NGOs. On a national and international level, he is mainly involved in the protection and restoration of watercourses and wetlands and the protection of biodiversity. He is currently active in the Coalition for Rivers in the association Arnika, which he co-founded. He is also a long-time judge of the Adapterra Awards.
