Tomáš Kratochvíl is a director of documentary and feature films. His current focus is primarily on social and ethnic issues. He graduated from the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University and spent a year in the editing department at FAMU. As a director, he participated in the feature film Hives (2012), which was created in collaboration with five European film schools and was screened at the San Sebastián Film Festival, among others. As a documentary filmmaker, he attracted attention with the film Gadžo (2014), an original film diary about a six-month stay among the Roma in an excluded locality in Předlice. His feature film Češi proti Čechům (2015) (Czechs Against Czechs),a loose sequel, received a special jury award at the International Documentary Film Festival in Jihlava and won the European Roma Film Festival AKE DIKHEA? in Berlin. The documentary Azylové domy (2015) (Asylum Houses)deals with social and racial issues as well as legislative processes. The film Uprchlíci (2016) (Refugees) aptures the situation on the Turkish border with Islamic State and the smuggling business on the Turkish coast. The author posed as a refugee himself and used a hidden camera to document complex negotiations with smugglers and the journey across the sea on a rubber boat. The documentary Spolužáci (2017) (Classmates) explores the division of Czech society through the author's interviews with his former classmates from a rural elementary school. In 2022, he completed a time-lapse feature-length documentary about a Czech Roma family in the UK called Pongo Calling (2022), which had its world premiere at the Sheffield DocFest and won numerous awards in Europe and the Czech Republic. His eight-part television series on experimental archaeology, Mistři starých řemesel (2022) (Master of Ancient Crafts, 2023), premiered at the AFO festival in Olomouc. Tomáš Kratochvíl also regularly contributes short films on environmental, social, and historical themes to several Czech Television series.
