Anna Šabatová is a Czech politician who, as a student at the Faculty of Arts, was imprisoned between 1971 and 1973 for distributing election leaflets. She signed Charter 77 and became its spokesperson in 1986. She was also a founding member of the Committee for the Defense of the Unjustly Prosecuted. After November 1989, she studied Czech at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and later obtained a doctorate at the Faculty of Law in Brno. From 2001 to 2007, she served as deputy ombudsman, and from 2014 to 2020, served a six-year term as ombudsman. In the meantime, she was chair of the Czech Helsinki Committee and taught at the Department of Social Work at Charles University. She and her husband Petr Uhl have raised three children.
