Curator, Art Historian, and Researcher

Markéta Svobodová graduated in Art History and Theory from Palacký University in Olomouc. In 1997–1998, she worked as a curator at the Olomouc Museum of Art. Since 1999, she has been a researcher at the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, focusing on 19th–21st century architecture. Her research also concentrates on the overlaps of architecture with scenography, exhibition design, and industrial design, as well as the theory and sociology of architecture—see her books Bauhaus and Czechoslovakia 1919–1938; Hore zdar! Building Strategies of the Club of Czech/Czechoslovak Tourists; or The Crematorium in the Process of Secularization of the Czech Lands in the 20th Century. She is the co-editor of the book Kali – ARCH/FI-FO/TYPO. František Kalivoda (1913–1973). Visions and Returns of Modernism. Currently, she is the head of the project Art Monuments / Architectural Manual / Prague. She has collaborated on projects such as Transformations of Rural Architecture with Emphasis on Development in the 19th and 20th Centuries (NAKI) or Preservation of Memory: Post-war Reflection of the Holocaust in Memorial Design and Fine Arts (NAKI). From 2021 to 2024, she taught 20th–21st century art history at the Department of Art Education, Faculty of Education, Palacký University. Her project, Images of Water (Obrazy vody), is part of Matchmaking.
