The destruction caused by wars does not only come from weapons – their devastating impact is further exacerbated by inequalities. We do not perceive all victims equally, nor do we pay attention to all suffering. It matters who suffers and where, as well as what color their skin is or what language they speak. We remember some genocides, while ignoring others. Many victims remain mere statistics.
According to Indian lawyer and activist Kirthi Jayakumar, wars highlight what we often overlook in society: that justice only exists if it applies to everyone. Women in war conflicts face specific forms of violence that remain outside the public eye and are systematically excluded from peace-making decisions. Yet it is precisely their share of power that can transform the nature of conflicts.
Pavla Hubálková guides us through a reflection on what wars would look like and how they might end if we took all voices and all suffering seriously.
