He Calls the Present “Hell”. Philosopher Timothy Morton Explores How Relationships Can Save Us

The world is suffocating from the climate crisis, exhaustion, and loss of meaning. This is not manifested in the same way everywhere – forests are burning in one place, rivers are drying up in another, and fascism is growing stronger yet elsewhere. A sense of uncertainty and exhaustion is spreading even where the crisis does not yet seem tangible. According to environmental philosopher Timothy Morton, the greatest threat is not ecological destruction itself, but the feeling that nothing is worth fighting for anymore. He suggests that we may find a way out of this elsewhere than we might expect – in relationships, compassion and care. Not as comfort, but as the basis for a new politics. Pavla Hubálková guides us through Morton's thinking, discussing what such politics might look like.
