What Kind of Schools Do We Want for Our Children?

Today is Education Day. Together with the Inspiration Forum community, we reflect on what kind of education our world needs—and how we can achieve it.

We’ve been using the internet daily for twenty years, and smartphones for ten. The world has changed more in a single generation than our parents or grandparents could ever have imagined—not only in terms of technology but especially in the relation to social and political challenges.

Does school help equip today’s children with the abilities and skills they need to be able to navigate a complex and ever-changing world, and to face the challenges it brings? Not really. Mechanical memorization or simply using digital tools won’t help us meaningfully co-create the world. We need to understand facts and information in context and in relation to one another, to work with them critically, and to discuss them effectively. We also need to be able to collaborate, analyze, care for ourselves, and nurture our relationships. Ideally, schools should help children acquire these skills and make them feel good in the school environment.

How can we create such schools? You can find inspiration for transforming education and schools—so that we can transform what we care about—in this podcast  with Norwegian educational philosopher Ingerid Straume or in the special Discussion Will Not Save The World. What is Happening Now in Education and Training? Lukáš Senft asks how we can bring about educational transformation—and what we should be asking of our politicians. And in Resilience Through Communities, the community opens up a conversation on how to strengthen the resilience of individuals, societies, institutions, and ecosystems.
